Informed by recognized medical guidance
Overview
Visual field testing is a test that checks how much you can see to the sides (peripheral vision) and in your central vision. It maps out where you can and cannot see. It is often used to find and track eye conditions like glaucoma, nerve damage, or stroke effects.
Key facts
- You do not need any special preparation before visual field testing.
- The test does not hurt and is safe for almost everyone.
- It measures blind spots (scotomas) and the total area of your vision.
- Your doctor may repeat the test several times to check for changes.
Visual field testing is a standard part of many eye exams, especially for people at risk of glaucoma or other vision problems.
