School-Age Ultrasound Explained
Overview
An ultrasound is a painless imaging test that uses sound waves to create pictures of the inside of the body. It does not use radiation, and it is often used in school-age children to look at organs in the belly, the kidneys and bladder, the heart, or other soft tissues. A trained technologist moves a small handheld device over the skin, sometimes with a clear gel, and a doctor later reviews the images.
